Salbutamol is drug used to treat asthma as it relaxes the muscles in the lungs and thus the breathing is improved. It opens the ways to the air. It is also used to treat bronchitis related problems. Salbutamol is also known as Salbutamol sulphate. When taken with an inhaler, the medicine goes directly to lungs, causing the mucous to clear immediately, hence it is more effective. The devices used to take this medicine is through MDI (metered Dose inhaler), nebulised, Rota haler or Auto haler. Salbutamol starts its effects in twenty to thirty minutes of intake, when taken through inhaler. Salbutamol is taken orally through an inhaler or is directly administered into the veins. It is also used to delay the preterm labour as it relaxes the uterine muscles. It is also used to treat patients suffering from paralysis and kidney disorders caused due to high potassium contents. It is also used as a fat burning chemical.
I want to start Salbutamol, what can be the common side effects?
Salbutamol can cause diarrhoea, Sleeplessness, Headache, excessive sweating, giddiness, Dry mouth, Some other serious symptoms can be Rapid heartbeat, Pain in the chest and some other allergic reactions. If you face some serious effects, immediately consult your doctor.
How can I use Salbutamol?
Use the drug as per prescription, if you are using it as an Aerosol inhaler.
For children: Three to four Puffs (inhalations) a day. One inhalation at a time is recommended.
Adults: Three to four puffs a day. 1-2 inhalations at a time.
Nebulizer: 1-2 puffs at a time.
For children: 1.25mg -2.5msg of Salbutamol.
Adults: 2.5mg -5.0 mg of Salbutamol.
Children should always be supervised by the adult, who is aware of how to use the device.
Tablets/syrups: They are taken usually three to four times a day.
What is the right method to store Salbutamol?
The medicine should be stored in the closed container. Store the medicine at room temperature; keep it away from direct light, moisture and heat. Keep the medicine away from the reach of the children. Do not use the outdated medicines. Canister should be stored with the nozzle end facing downwards. Never puncture or burn the aerosol container, even if not in use.
What if I miss a dose?
Take a medicine as soon as you remember it. If it is time to take another dose, miss the skipped Dose and continue the normal schedule. Never take the double dose to cover up the missed dose.
I am a nursing mother and pregnant at a same time. Should I take Salbutamol?
Most of the medicines mix with the milk and can be harmful for your child, also the studies about the effect of Salbutamol on pregnant lady is still unknown so consult your doctor before you start taking this medicine.
