Risperdal is a drug that changes some chemicals in the brain to produce anti psychotic effect. It alters the communication of the nerves in the brain. It is also used for children to treat symptoms of irritability. Risperdal is not used to treat elder adults. Risperdal is used to treat mental disorder in which a person hallucinates has distorted speech and vision disorders. It is also called as Schizophrenia. This disease is not something that can be diagnosed in laboratory but is based on experience of the patient itself. Side effects of Risperdal

Risperdal is not used to treat serious cognitive disorder which is also termed as Dementia. It may prove to be fatal if given to an adult with Dementia and eventually cause heart attack and stroke. Other side effects may include fatigue, fever, tremors, dry mouth, restlessness, abdominal pain, increased saliva and appetite. If you have an active sexual life, you must talk to your partner before going for the medication as it may cause a sexual dysfunction. It may also cause difficulty having an orgasm. Anxiety, insomnia and low blood pressure are other side effects of Risperdal. Risperdal may also make you sensitive to temperature change, avoid going from cold to hot or hot to cold temperature. You may also have trouble swallowing or faint. Drink plenty of water during the course of medication and keep yourself well hydrated. If you had a liver disease, kidney disease, breast cancer, diabetes, low blood cells, trouble swallowing or a heart disease in the past, you would require consulting your doctor to make special dosage adjustments. Risperdal can raise the blood sugar levels. If you have excessive thirst, hunger and little weakness, you must consult your doctor to check if you have any signs of hyperglycemia. Risperdal may cause breast development of man, milk production in breasts in both the sexes, or missing of menstrual periods. Avoid driving and other activities that need alertness (such as working on machinery, playing high speed and intense sports) during the course of medication.
